The Uniity Resource Shop will be off-limits to users in the China District on March 31st.

It was announced at the recent forum that users in mainland China and Hong Kong and Hong Kong would not be able to continue to visit or access free and paid resources through the Uniity Resource Shop overseas as of 31 March 2026, due to the upgrade of the distributor’s regional licensing, distribution and compliance requirements.”

Unity notes that users of resources that have been purchased by distributors in the Greater China region can continue to download and use these resources, but they will no longer be updated or supported through the Global Unity Resource Shop. Users who have purchased affected resources over the past six months may apply for a refund — which will result in the loss of access to such resources. At the same time, developers in mainland, Hong Kong and Macao will not have access to the global Uniity Resource Shop after 31 March, nor will they have access to their free and purchased resources. Users must download all resources before the deadline to retain ownership. Unity has issued a list of affected resources to facilitate user verification of the resources held.

Users at the Unity Forum reacted to this generally negatively. Many users question the practice of mandatory Uniity matching acquired resources manually with impact lists containing thousands of items to determine whether action is required. Some users called Unity’s solution “no good”, while others questioned why engine manufacturers could not simplify the process by providing personalized and affected purchase lists. The release of Unity 6 and its subsequent editions in China (including Hong Kong and Macao) was discontinued on 7 April 2025. This is part of the localization of Unity in China, which is being taken over by the Unity 2022 LTS-based Solidarity Engine, which supports local platforms such as small games, Open Harmony and motors.

According to a report by Bloomberg in late February, Unity Software is assessing a wide range of strategic options for selling Chinese operations. Unity China was founded in August 2022 as a joint venture of Unity Global and Chinese enterprises (shareholders including Ali Baba, China Mobile, Miha Travel, etc.), with a post-investment valuation of $1 billion. Unity engaged consultants to assess market interest, but the consultations were early and no agreement was reached. This continues the trend towards the diversion of Unity, which aims to optimize global resource allocation and ease the pressure on profits.
